Garage Sale

A garage sale (aka a yard sale, rummage sale, or car boot sale in the UK) is when individuals sell unwanted household items directly from their home, typically from their garage, driveway, or yard.

These informal sales usually happen on weekends and feature a variety of pre-owned items like clothing, furniture, books, toys, tools, and household goods at very low prices. Prices are often negotiable, and haggling is common. Some neighborhoods organize community-wide garage sales where multiple households participate on the same day, attracting more buyers.

In the UK, car boot sales follow a similar concept but take place in a designated field or parking lot where sellers operate from their car trunks ('boots'). Garage sales are popular with thrifters and resellers who arrive early ('early birds') to find the best deals, as well as with people looking for affordable second-hand items or vintage treasures.
