Turning Football Into a Sustainability Powerhouse

Updated: 3 days ago

Football, or soccer as it's known in some countries, is the most popular sport on the planet. With its global reach and passionate fanbase, it has the potential to be a major force for positive change. In this post, we'll look at the clubs and organizations that are turning the game into a sustainability champion.

The sports industry has a significant environmental footprint. From energy-guzzling stadiums to the carbon emissions of traveling fans, football's impact on the planet is substantial. But things are changing.

Organizations Pushing For Sustainability in Football

Innovative groups and organizations are engaging all facets of football - players, clubs, leagues, and fans - to embrace sustainability as a core value.

Here are a few examples:

Common Goal

Common Goal inspires players, managers, and industry leaders to pledge 1% of all revenues to drive progress towards the Global Goals. The movement counts more than 190 pro players and managers so far and involves more than 1.3 million young people to date.

We Play Green

We Play Green activates professional footballers as sustainability champions. They recruit professional football players to become We Play Green Team Players, providing them with education, training, and support to become climate and environmental advocates within their communities.

Football For Future

Football For Future is a non-profit organization dedicated to building an environmentally sustainable culture within the football industry. As climate experts and sustainability leaders, they empower people and organizations across the football landscape with the tools and knowledge needed to respond effectively to the climate crisis.

World Football Summit

World Football Summit convenes football industry leaders to share knowledge and collaborate on embedding purpose across football. They promote diversity, equality, and sustainability.

Forest Green Rovers

Clubs like Forest Green Rovers (one of our partner, along with Sutton United FC) are showing how teams can reduce emissions through renewable energy, waste reduction, plant-based food, and more.

PledgeBall

Fans are getting involved too, through events like Green Football Weekend and platforms like Pledgeball that unite supporter groups to take collective actions to tackle climate change. By organizing small and fun healthy competitions between supporter groups or clubs, these organizations provide a fun framework for making substantive emissions reductions.

Football's immense popularity gives it unrivalled potential to shift cultural attitudes and behaviors around sustainability. Already, the green gaming efforts have reached millions of fans who may not otherwise engage in climate issues.

By continuing to ramp up sustainability, football can score big wins for the planet while keeping the beautiful game alive and thriving well into a greener future.
