Y2K Fashion Trends are Back: 10 Iconic 2000s Trends That Are Taking Over Your FYP

A guy and girl Gen-Z pose in a dark London street dressed in stunning Y2K fashion.

Y2K fashion is having its main character moment right now.

If your FYP is anything like mine, you've noticed the 2000s are literally everywhere – and no, it's not just because you've been binge-watching old episodes of Gilmore Girls.

Here's the thing about Y2K fashion coming back: we get to cherry-pick the best parts.

This time around, we're skipping the fashion disasters (looking at you, dangerously low-rise jeans that made sitting down an extreme sport) and focusing on the trends that actually deserve a comeback.

Whether you lived through these trends the first time around or you're just discovering the magic of butterfly tops and baguette bags, here's your guide to the biggest Y2K trends taking over 2025.

Top 10 Y2K trends making a comeback

As Paris Hilton would say: "That's hot" - and she's totally right.

1 - Baby tees & crop tops

There was a time when every top seemed to be covered in rhinestones and had some sassy phrase across the chest. That time is now – but with a 2025 twist. Baby tees are having their redemption arc, and honestly?

We're here for it.

Today's baby tees are all about that fitted silhouette with a slightly cropped length. Look for vintage-inspired graphics, cute phrases, and yes – even a rhinestone moment.

Pair them with high-waisted anything to avoid that constant pulling-down-your-shirt life we lived in the 2000s.

Celeb inspo: Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa are basically the queens of the baby tee revival.

2 - Uggs (the ultimate comeback)

Here’s a plot twist I never saw coming: the shoes we all swore we'd never wear again are suddenly the It-Girl essential. But forget everything you know about Uggs with miniskirts – 2025's Ugg moment hits different.

The Ultra Mini is the main character now, and honestly? They're actually super cute. These shorter, more structured boots are perfect for that model-off-duty look when paired with baggy jeans and a cropped puffer.

Pro tip: Size up half a size in the Ultra Minis; they run a little snug.

3 - Faux fur everything

Y2K faux fur is making its comeback but with a 2025 twist. Gone are the days of scratchy mall-bought fuzzy everything – today's faux fur is all about luxe touches and sustainable materials.

The key to wearing it now? Less is more. Think subtle fur trim on jacket collars, bag straps, or crop tops rather than full-on fuzzy fits. It's still giving Y2K energy, just with a more refined (and animal-friendly) approach.

4 - Low-rise everything

A GenZ girl with her boyfriend looks directly into the camera, wearing a low-rise Y2k look.

Don't panic, but low-rise is back. Before you have flashbacks to the great whale tail era of 2003, hear me out.

The key is balance: we're not diving back into lower back tattoos and exposed thongs. Think mid-low rise that sits just below your belly button, paired with longer tops or cropped jackets. The vibe is more "off-duty model" than Christina Aguilera.

Style tip: If you’re not sure about trying low-rise, start with cargo pants. They're usually more forgiving than jeans, and the baggy fit feels a bit more modern.

5 - Butterfly motifs

Y2K's favourite insect is fluttering back into our wardrobes, and this time it's evolved.

Today's butterfly pieces are more sophisticated than their 2000s ancestors. Think sheer mesh tops with subtle butterfly prints, delicate butterfly jewellery, and designer bags with wing details.

Just remember: one butterfly piece per outfit – we're not trying to look like we raided Claire's.

Pro tip: Start with butterfly hair clips or a subtle printed top as opposed to all-over butterfly looks. Baby steps, less is more.

6 - Velour tracksuits

Juicy Couture, who? Just kidding – they're back too. The matching set renaissance is here, and Velour is leading the charge.

Today's velour sets just sing – they're sleeker than their 2000s ancestors, minus the bedazzled words across the back. Pair them with chunky sneakers or even heels (yes, really) for a look that says, "I'm not going to the gym, but I’m sure as hell going somewhere fun."

7 - Mini skirts over jeans

Controversial? Maybe. Coming back anyway? Ofc. The skirt-over-pants combo is peak Y2K fashion, and 2025's version actually works when done right.

Here's how to nail it: Layer a pleated mini or tennis skirt over straight-leg jeans (don’t go baggy with this one, trust me). Keep the colours coordinated and play with proportions – shorter skirt, longer top.

It's giving main character energy without looking like you're cosplaying a Disney Channel red carpet.

Style hack: Start with denim-on-denim – a jean mini over straight-leg jeans. It's basically impossible to mess up.

8 - Baguette bags

Thank you, Carrie Bradshaw, for making tiny shoulder bags cool again. The 2024 baguette bag revival is everything – vintage Fendi baguettes are basically going for the price of a small car now.

Having said that, you really don't need to drop a bunch of cash to get in on this trend.

Every brand, from Zara to Coach, is doing their take on the baguette, and some of them are actually cute. Look for ones with chunky hardware or fun textures to make it feel more modern.

Pro tip: If you're hunting for an authentic Y2K baguette, check out Ganddee for verified vintage sellers (shameless plug, but it's true).

9 - Statement belts

Chain belts, logo belts, belts with huge buckles – if it makes a statement, it's in. But unlike the 2000s when we wore them with literally everything, 2024's belt game is more strategic.

The move now is to use your statement belt to add some spice to basic fits. Think simple jeans and a white tee with a chunky chain belt or a slip dress cinched with a logo belt. Just maybe don't wear them over your tops like we did in 2004 – we've grown since then.

10 - Micro mini bags

Last but definitely least (in size, not style) – let's talk about bags that can barely fit your lip gloss. The tinier, the better is the motto for 2025, and somehow, these impractical little icons are everything.

Sure, they won't fit your phone (or literally anything else), but that's not the point. These bags are pure vibes.

The secret to making them work is to save them for nights out when you only need the essentials, or style them alongside a bigger bag for the best of both worlds.

Where to find authentic Y2K pieces

Hunting for Y2K fashion is half the fun. Here's your guide to finding the best pieces, whether you're after authentic 2000s items or modern takes on the trends.

Vintage and second-hand

  • Curated vintage stores are gold mines for authentic baby tees, baguette bags, and early 2000s designer pieces

  • Local thrift stores often have hidden Y2K gems (especially in the t-shirt and denim sections)

  • Online marketplaces like Depop and Vinted are packed with Y2K pieces - just check seller ratings and ask for detailed photos

  • Car boot sales in wealthy areas can turn up pristine

Money-saving tips

  • Search "Y2K" and "2000s" on second-hand apps - some sellers don't know what they have.

  • Check your mom's closet (or any relative who was stylish in the 2000s)

  • Follow vintage sellers on social media for early access to drops

  • Use Ganddee (We literally exist to make this easy for you) to find local vintage stores and get notifications about Y2K pop-up sales in your area

Just make sure that when shopping for vintage Y2K, you check the condition carefully. We’ve written a whole post on identifying vintage here if you’re looking for more tips.

And of course, if you're using the Ganddee app (which you absolutely should be), fave your favourite stores to stay updated on new arrivals!
